According to a poll of 5,677 women conducted by gynaecologist Dr Anita Mitra (check out this study), having lockdown-disrupted periods is pretty common. More than 65% of women noticed a change in their periods or wilder-than-usual hormonal symptoms during lockdown. Having conducted a mini-survey of YogaBellies ladies, these results are bang on. Hormonally-speaking, shit got real during lockdown.
But why did this happen?
If you think about the impact lockdown had on so many of us – financial uncertainty, social isolation, psychological pressures – the impact on our menstrual cycle isn’t a huge surprise. Stress=hormonal imbalances=messed up menses.
This can look like excessive bleeding, more cramping, late/early periods, as well as things like dramatic mood swings or trouble getting to sleep.
What can you do about it?
I’ve put together a little Hormonal Imbalance Quiz (link in bio,) which you can check off on your phone to see if you are currently suffering from an imbalance. If the quiz indicates there could be an issue, it could be time to look at finding some balance. Make some ongoing lifestyle changes: More yoga, eating hormone friendly foods and getting out in the fresh air, will all help. Focus on self-care.
